Painted Desert, by Knitting Fever
Painted Desert is a fingering/sock weight made of 100% machine-washable wool. The generous 437 yards is enough to make a small shawl or a pair of socks. It's spun in two plies with great stitch definiton, each strand slowly changing color at different times. This creates a very tasteful, subtle variation in color. Instead of striping abruptly, Painted Desert's color shifts blend in gradually. This yarn is aptly named after the famous variegated badlands of Arizona. |
At Argyle, we're lucky enough to have three samples of Painted Desert. The great thing is, all three of these patterns are absolutely free!
First up is the classic, "Painted Desert Shawl."
This simple shawl is worked from the neck down. A soothing stockinette stitch and eyelet pattern make this a good project for watching TV or visiting with friends. The shifting colors of the Painted Desert yarn make the finished shawl look more complicated than it is.

Our second sample is the Tree & Feather Shawl.
The interest in the twisted cable stitches as well as the lace edging keep the knitter engaged throughout the piece. While this pattern is a little more complex, it is still manageable enough for an experienced beginner who wants to learn some new stitches and techniques.

And here's Knitting Fever's own version of the Tree & Feather, this time in the color "Autumn."
Our third in-house sample is simply named the "Red Shawl." Our version is left and center, with the designer's at right. The simple garter stitch in enlivened by short rows, which give the appearance of opposing triangles interlocking in alternation.
And lastly, here are some more patterns by indie designers created specifically with Painted Desert in mind. They are the "Juneau Nights Wrap" by Sue Fischer, the "Riblet Shawlette" by Merrilee Ericson, and "Wrapped In Door County" by Diane Augustin.
