128 Superwash, by Cascade
128 Superwash is hands down one of the most popular yarns we’ve ever sold. Why? It has a lot going for it. At just $12.50 it is a really affordable option for people who prefer to work with only natural fibers. Its 100% merino wool content really is remarkably soft, and combined with its machine washability makes it a perfect choice for kids and baby blankets. Plus, it’s chunky enough to work up quickly on size 10 needles or a J hook and be the right thickness for when you want to get cozy on chilly autumn evenings. Use it for hats, scarves, sweaters, and blankets. |
Below is a blanket that I (David) made from 128 Superwash. This highlights, I hope, yet one more attraction of 128, which is that even though it's baby soft, it still has really clear stitch definition.
All twelve squares are from the pattern booklet "Building Blocks," by Knit Purl Hunter, perfect for learning new stitches.
What I love about it is she starts you out with two squares of just knit and purl. Then she introduces one new stitch at a time, including cables, SSK, left and right twist, bobbles, yarn overs, and so on. By knitting the new stitch over and over in each square you finally master it, and right about when you're starting to get bored of that stitch, the square ends and you're on to the next one. By the way, if you ever encounter a new stitch in a pattern and you don't know how to do it, I highly recommend her free video tips.
Below are closeups of individual stitches: An SSK, a mock cable, a true cable left and right, and yarn overs with a central double decrease.
Below are a few designs using 128 Superwash from Cascade's own design team.
From the left are the Chunky Fair Isle Pom Pom Hat to use with two nicely contrasting colors, and the Cabled Band Hat, in which you start by knitting the braid, then buid the hat around it. Next we have two sweaters: the Celtic Cable Pullover for Him (which also comes in a female version), and the Arcadian Lace Pullover, which uses a lot of yarn-overs and slip-slip-knits to create the lace look.
