Kureyon Air, by Noro
Kureyon Air is a super bulky 100% wool in exciting self-striping colors whose minimal twist yields a lofty feel. It has a lot of warmth without a lot of weight. Great for last-minute gifts, working on a US 13 needle or an M hook will have the stitches flying into place.
Look at this gorgeous mess! Noro's colors are so unique, so distinctive that you often know them as soon as you see them. Who wouldn't like to dive into this cheerful heap like a pile of autumn leaves? As nights grow darker ever earlier, a burst of color can be so cheerful in crisp weather. And even those of us who might prefer a staid charcoal or aran sweater this time of year can still let loose and have fun with color when it comes to accessories like hats and scarves, right? |
One of the great things about using a self-striping yarn like Kureyon Air is there's really no need to go crazy with any intricate pattern; the yarn does the work for you. This simple hat Kate made is just a twisted rib at the base, and good old stockingette through the body, but it's action packed by virtue of color. Look close at those tiny flecks of pink and chartreuse sprinkled around. That's a Noro hallmark right there. We used a pom pom maker for that proud beast on top, with the same Kureyon Air as for the body of the hat. |
About Noro
After founding Noro over 30 years ago in Aichi, Japan, Mr. Eisaku Noro still personally oversees all of the creative work during yarn development. The first step is selecting the raw materials, high quality natural fibers that also respect ecological concerns. The next step is composing the yarn into its many shades.

A talented painter in his youth, Mr. Noro decided to apply his gifted eye for color to composing the artistic and sophisticated palettes of his yarns.
His philosophy is to choose colors that capture the feeling of the vitality of nature.
In the actual production of the yarns, Mr. Noro's philosophy is to do as much as possible by hand, and not by machine, to preserve the natural characteristics of the fibers. He prioritizes keeping both the use of chemicals and the consumption of energy to an absolute minimum.
When spending so much time to carefully make a garment by hand, it's nice to know the very yarn itself you've chosen was crafted with love.
Here are some of the more ambitious projects from Noro's own design team.
We've got three tops; a pullover with a rare right side/wrong side alternation in the stitches, a slash neck top with an optional polo neck, and a flattering high-waisted cardigan. Plus, we've got a cozy over-the-shoulder cowl.
