April 29th-30th!

What is the Brooklyn Yarn Crawl?

It's a weekend event put on by the same folks who bring you the fall NYC Yarn Crawl, where knitters, crocheters, spinners, dyers, weavers and fiber lovers of all kinds visit Brooklyn's finest local yarn shops to celebrate our love of the fiber arts.

Small enough to hit all the stores, and each store is different must-see. With only Brooklyn stores to visit, you'll have time to savor all the offerings at each store and really get to know its personality.

At the same time you get to explore the borough's fun and diverse neighborhoods from Atlantic Avenue to Red Hook; Bushwick to Windsor Terrace. Along the way stop at great restaurants for sips and eats, and show off your score!

How does it work?

It's FREE to crawl, and there is no pre-registration necessary. Just grab a map, and visit the shops. It's that simple!

Adding to the crawl fun are the great prizes you can win.

To enter to win, just sign in at our store using our computer. It's that simple!

Donated by the Yarn Crawl's generous sponsors, the prize winners will get gift certificates that can be spent on anything in the store where it was won. How great is that?!

Each store will have two Yarn Crawl raffle prizes. If you win, you can choose whatever you want in the store where you won the prize. Plus both winners get vintage Yarn Crawl totes with buttons. We think it's awesome and hope you do too!

First prize : $150
Second prize : $100

At the end of the crawl, random winners are drawn for each prize. Check back here post-crawl to see if you won.

(and of our own Luminous Brooklyn)

will be donated

to help NFC's remarkable founder Karida Collins create a new studio, community arts hub, and fiber arts makerspace

Over the years, Neighborhood Fiber Co. has been so generous through charitable giving to a range of worthy causes - and now they could use our help!

Founder Karida Collins created the NFC Momentum Fund, a charitable organization dispersing donations to a variety of organizations working for justice, empowerment, and equality in Neighborhood's home town of Baltimore.

Honored as a GoFundMe hero, Karida's fund has so far raised over $100,000 in donations, and Neighborhood Fiber Co. has personally donated tens of thousands to a range of causes.

Now that Neighborhood Fiber Co. can use an assist, will you help us lend a hand?

Starting right now through Sunday, May 22nd, 20% of all sales of Neighborhood Fiber Co. will be donated to the NFC New Building and Community Arts Centerfund.

Plus, we'll be donating 20% of all sales of our in-house brand Luminous Brooklyn to the fund as well!

Whether you shop in store or online, that portion will be donated to this worthy cause.

Let's hear what's at stake from founder Karida Collins herself:

"Greetings NFC Fam,

I’m doing something today that’s pretty difficult for me: asking for your help for myself. I'm raising money through GoFundMe to help pay for the renovations of the future home of Neighborhood Fiber Co.

"If you follow us on social media or have visited our studio recently, you have probably heard that we are moving locations. In early 2021, I purchased the building where the next chapter of Neighborhood Fiber Co. is going to begin. Not only will Team NFC work out of this new studio, but it will also be a community arts hub and fiber arts makerspace. Baltimore Youth Arts, a creative entrepreneurship and job training non-profit that provides artistic and professional opportunities to young people, especially those who have been involved with the justice system, will house their administrative headquarters there.

"The increased space will allow me to invite more renowned artists to teach classes and workshops, and offer them at an accessible price point to Baltimoreans. Local fiber artists and budding entrepreneurs will be invited to use the space and equipment, two things that are a huge obstacle when a person is trying to start a business. I personally want to be able to share my own experiences and expertise to newcomers to help demystify the process, and incubate new talent in Baltimore."

"I knew the building would need a lot of work to make it safe and usable for Team NFC, Baltimore Youth Arts, and all the guests, visitors, and artists who would walk through its doors. The new space is now under construction to bring its gas and electric utilities up to code, and improve ventilation systems so that we can more safely work with dye pigments (as well as decrease the risk of Covid infection). Once these critical renovations are completed, cosmetic construction can begin on retail store space, class spaces, and outdoor area."

"Renovation projects are always costly and time-consuming - I was prepared for that. Unfortunately in this case, supply-chain issues and labor shortages caused by the unpredictability of Covid has almost doubled the cost of construction. I have already invested over $300k of my own money into this project, and I am determined to see it through to the end. I sought advice and help from many of my peers and colleagues, and Benjamin Levisay of Stitches Events generously offered to host a GoFundMe so that we could complete the initial, critical renovations.

"Before I agreed, I wanted to make sure I exhausted every route open to me. I have applied for grants, worked with community lenders, and greatly expanded the number of stockists to whom Neighborhood Fiber Co. supplies its yarns and fibers. Now I’m asking you for help to get us over the finish line.

Directions to the City Sun Shawl knit-along

Join us for a knitting party this Saturday, August 7th, from 10:00 to 12:00.

This event is co-hosted by Brooklyn General Store and Argyle Yarn Shop.

We will be meeting up at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Parking near Brooklyn Bridge Park is very limited. Brooklyn Bridge Park is accessible by bus, subway, and ferry.

Here is what the walk to the location looks like, walking west down Atlantic Ave starting from Hicks Street:

Walking west, you will pass underneath the 278 overpass.

The entrance to Pier 6 is straight ahead. Here's what it looks like.

There will be benches and bushes on either side. Keep going straight.

On the right, you will pass by the open air seating for a restaurant, Fornino.

As you approach the end of Pier 6, you will pass by many of these lovely yellow flower bushes.

As you continue down Pier 6, any path will open up through a clearing into a grassy field.

And there we'll be at the picnic tables!

Although this is great news, please note that some of the services we normally offer are still limited.

Here's how we can work together: We will be very happy to help you pick a project or answer any questions you have about yarn weight or yardage, but for now we will do that via email.

Please email us at argyleyarnshop@gmail.com so we can do that homework together before you arrive, to make your shopping experience is as streamlined as possible.

We will not be able to do Ravelry searches together at the front desk.

Take a moment to explore our web store! It's a great way to narrow down the options you're considering before you arrive. If you know what weight of yarn you're looking for, we've got all the

The goal is that when you arrive we’ll have decided together which pattern you’d like to make. That way we can have all your options ready for viewing ahead of time.

We are happy to text you or email you photos of the actual skeins you’re considering. Don’t be shy! We are always here for you!

When you visit, masks are required. Our staff will also be wearing masks. We ask you to please maintain a six foot distance between us and between other customers.

The most contact-free solutions: If you wish to shop with us, but would like to ensure the least amount of time in proximity to other people, we're very happy to accommodate!

Option 1: Please remember our web store is open round the clock, and we are happy to mail the package to you, even if you live right up the street!

If you have any questions at all (what yarn would be best for a pattern, or what colors we think would look best together) please email us and we will be happy to answer your questions.

Option 2: If you do live nearby, consider using our web store to make your purchase, and then select in-store pickup. That way it will be wrapped up before your arrival and as simple for you as stepping in and grabbing the bag.

We can even bring it out curbside for you if you wish! When you arrive, just call us at (347) 227-7799 (the number is also posted at the door) and we will step out and pass it to you. If you are parked in a car nearby we can pass it into the passenger window.

Option 3: You tell us! If there is a way we can make you feel safe and secure that we haven't thought of, please email us at argyleyarnshop@gmail.com and we'll do our best to deliver for you!

We are not allowed to provide:

• In-store fixing mistakes or pattern support.

• Returns. All sales, including yarn, are final during this time.

• Use of the restroom.

• If you need to make or receive a phone call, ask you to please step outside.

Got enough yarn? Just kidding! (But do ya?)

If so: Pretty, non-yarn things ahead!

Lovely wooden tools, markers, tricks,

and baubles from Katrinkles are in!

But first, a candid word:

We never know quite the right tone to take when our folks out west ask how things are holding up over here. Our go-to is to be forward thinking and uplifting, to tell them we'll come out on the other side as well put together as we were before. But sometimes we wonder if we're reassuring them with a picture that's a bit rosier than reality, and remember it's okay to admit we're not 100% sure where we're all going to be in a month, let alone by fall.

In a similar way, it's hard sometimes to know what tone to take writing these emails. We know that you are going through at least as bad as what we are, so why type out our insecurities to you? Better to focus on the delight of the crafts we have in common, right?

But then, we worry that that sunny tone might come across like: "With all that's going on, and all you guys are thinking about is selling stitch markers?"

Here's the conclusion we're coming to:
When we (taking turns) go into the (closed and locked) storefront of Argyle, it's like taking a breath of fresh air!
Being surrounded by the elegance, beauty, and as-yet unfulfilled potential of all these radiant raw materials looking for a purpose is invigorating.

So we hope you will take these emails in that spirit in which we send them: An escape. A getaway, such as it is. A chance to daydream about things we've created in the past and the things we'll make in the future. And a moment of happy distraction via light, color, and creative energy. . .

The question was if you have enough yarn?
If the answer is no, we're perfectly glad to hear that and invite you to our web store!

But if you're looking for a non-yarn way to treat yourself or someone you love, we just got in a batch of very pretty (and clever) measurers, markers, and instructional tools from the talented team at Katrinkles!

They fall into basically four categories:

• Needle and hook measurers (Yes, they are precise! Katy, the founder, is a knitter and would never do you dirty like that).

• Gauge swatch rulers

• Instructional tags: These are brief walkthroughs of the kind of short, but complicated, recipes we don't want to mess up and want on hand. A lot classier than a post-it!

Once we're knitting a bit out of our league it seems like there's always the same brief formula that keeps coming up but is hard to memorize. (All through high school I had to carry a note card with the quadratic equation on it!)

Is today a time to teach or a time to learn? (Or both!)

The calming, curative, therapeutic benefits of knitting and crochet have been scientifically proven time and again to reduce stress and increase pleasure and well being.

Okay, what we're not going to do is suggest that you should be knitting or crocheting right now!

You know best what will give you peace of mind during this challenging time, and the last thing we need to do is guilt-trip ourselves by feeling like we somehow ought to be more productive!

We've both put projects down and picked projects up over the last month, and felt sure both times that that decision was the right one.

So we're just saying if . . . if you have been thinking about picking back up knitting or crochet and wondering if what they say about their therapeutic value is true, we have some gentle encouragement and information:

Crochet and knitting have been scientifically proven time and again to reduce stress and increase pleasure and well being.

A study of "people who described feeling out of control of their lives, worthless, lonely and isolated because of chronic illness" concluded that "the discovery of knitting had a hugely positive impact on their well-being.

"First and foremost, they felt knitting gave them something productive, creative and enjoyable to do.

"Forgotten feelings, such as excitement and anticipation, were rekindled and they began to plan ahead, set goals, and experience increased self-esteem."

The main conditions that therapeutic knitting is used for are:

Stress
Low mood
Depression
Anxiety
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

A Time to Recharge

According to an article in the New York Times, "the repetitive action of needlework can induce a relaxed state like that associated with meditation and yoga.

"Once you get beyond the initial learning curve, knitting and crocheting can lower heart rate and blood pressure and reduce harmful blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol. . . Perhaps most exciting is research that suggests that crafts like knitting and crocheting may help to stave off a decline in brain function with age."

Let go . . . of what you can!

Knitting and crochet "have been used by occupational therapists to alleviate symptoms of depression," reports a Washington Post article:
In one study of 38 women struggling with mental health concerns, after an average of 80 minutes of knitting a day for three weeks, patients reported less fear and preoccupation, that knitting had a calming effect, and that knitting gave them a sense of pride, satisfaction and accomplishment.

Calming, healing. . .

Plus, a 2012 academic study published in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy concluded that knitting "can impact positively on health and wellbeing," and is effective "for relaxation, stress relief and creativity."

The study "results show a significant relationship between knitting frequency and feeling calm and happy. More frequent knitters also reported higher cognitive functioning.

"Knitting has significant psychological and social benefits, which can contribute to wellbeing and quality of life. As a skilled and creative occupation, it has therapeutic potential."

My friends, despite the grim news for our city, I have been reaching out to people I love, and as they have reached back I feel myself grounded once again.

We are going to be OK. We are not going to let our community down. We will stand together, and united we will all come back from this.

Yesterday I jogged to the shop through eerily empty streets because I knew something special was arriving from Ireland.

I received a bit of joy that morning from the very kind UPS man, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
